Build Your Winter Car Kit

It looks like this winter, the snow just doesn’t want to stop. According to the news, East Idaho weather is going to be pretty terrible this weekend!

Here are some tips that experts give to stay safe and comfortable even in awful conditions:

• Keep a small bag of kitty litter in your car. You can use the kitty litter to put under your tires for traction if you get stuck on ice.
• Keep a spray bottle filled with 50% rubbing alcohol and 50% water. You can use this to unfreeze windshields, door handles, door locks, windows, and many other items in and around your car that can get frozen.
• Coffee can filled with tea light candles and matches. This is a great way to keep your car nice and warm if you get stuck. Burn one candle at a time inside of the coffee can, and it will warm up the entire car! If you need more heat, add another candle.
• Keep some mylar “space blankets” like these in your car, and one wool blanket. Wrap yourself in mylar, and then the wool blanket, and you will stay warm even in the worst conditions.
• Granola bars or power bars. It may not be a gourmet meal, but it will help you keep your strength up longer if you have something to eat!
• Make sure you have a good first aid kit. Your mom and/or your scout leader will shame you eternally if you die from gangrene because you didn’t have some antimicrobial ointment and band-aids readily available.
• Small tool kit. This should be in the car year-round, but having a hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, and other small tools can really make a difference if you have minor car issues.
