Taylor Swift on Music’s Future: Surprises Are In, Autographs Are Out

ABC/Richard Harbaugh Many pundits have written about how the music industry is in dire straits, as album sales continue to shrink and artists who regularly hit #1 can barely manage a top 10 debut these days.  But one person who’s optimistic about the music industry — and the future of the album as an art form — is Taylor Swift.  In fact, she’s even written an op-ed on the topic for the Wall Street Journal.

“I’d like to point out that people [are] still buying albums, but now they’re buying just a few of them. They are buying only the ones that hit them like an arrow through the heart or have made them feel strong or allowed them to feel like they really aren’t alone in feeling so alone,” writes Taylor, and she should know, since her own multimillion-selling albums fit this description.

“There are always going to be those artists who break through on an emotional level and end up in people’s lives forever,” she adds. “We will cherish every album they put out until they retire and we will play their music for our children and grandchildren. As an artist, this is the dream bond we hope to establish with our fans.”

So how can artists establish this bond?  Taylor says keeping the audience guessing is a key.

“I think forming a bond with fans in the future will come in the form of constantly providing them with the element of surprise. No, I did not say ‘shock’; I said ‘surprise,’” she writes.

As an example, she adds, “In the YouTube generation we live in, I walked out onstage every night of my stadium tour last year knowing almost every fan had already seen the show online. To continue to show them something they had never seen before, I brought out dozens of special guest performers to sing their hits with me.”

“I hope the next generation’s artists will continue to think of inventive ways of keeping their audiences on their toes, as challenging as that might be,” writes Taylor.

Taylor also says that in her opinion, the distinction between musical genres is becoming obsolete, and so are autographs. “I haven’t been asked for an autograph since the invention of the iPhone with a front-facing camera,” she points out. “The only memento ‘kids these days’ want is a selfie.”

She concludes by writing, “This moment in music is so exciting because the creative avenues an artist can explore are limitless…The only real risk is being too afraid to take a risk at all.”

So where does Taylor see herself in this brave new musical future?  “I’ll just be sitting back and growing old, watching all of this happen or not happen, all the while trying to maintain a life rooted in this same optimism,” she writes. “And I’d also like a nice garden.”

Jewel Announces Divorce from Rodeo Star Husband Ty Murray

Christopher Polk/ACA2012/Getty ImagesJewel and her rodeo star husband, Ty Murray, are getting a divorce.

The singer makes the announcement on her website in a post titled “Dear World.” She writes, “Ty and I have always tried to live the most authentic life possible, and we wanted our separation as husband and wife to be nothing less loving than the way we came together. For some time we have been engaged in a private and difficult, but thoughtful and tender undoing of ourselves.”

Jewel says she and Ty are both seeking to grow as individuals, which they couldn’t as a couple.  “We truly believe we can find greater happiness apart than together,” Jewel explains, “and this is why we are taking the enormous and heartbreaking step of divorce.”

She adds, “We have chosen the much more difficult task of undoing ourselves stitch by stitch, and releasing each other with love so that we may take on our new form: dear friends and devoted co-parents of our beloved son Kase.”

The letter also includes a note from both Jewel and Ty saying, “Our dedication to our son is unwavering and we are both committed to being the best partners in raising our son.”

Jewel and Ty Murray got married in the Bahamas in 2008. Their son, Kase, was born in 2011.

What Can’t Kelly Clarkson Can’t Wait for Her Baby to Do?

Justin Lubin/NBCWhen a new baby arrives, most parents start looking forward to the day he or she sleeps through the night, or is toilet trained, or old enough to say “Mommy.”  Kelly Clarkson, however, is looking forward to something much simpler from her new baby daughter, River Rose.

“Is it weird that I wait every day to hear my little baby laugh?” she tweeted. “I just really want to hear her giggle and all I get are quirky smiles :)”

River Rose, the first child for Kelly and her husband, Brandon Blackstock, arrived June 12.   Kelly shared a photo of the baby on Twitter on June 20, calling her, “the greatest thing on the planet.”  Brandon has two children from a previous marriage.

Taylor Swift Welcomes New Kitten Named After “Law & Order: SVU” Character

ABC/Jon LeMayTaylor Swift‘s beloved cat Meredith is named after Ellen Pompeo‘s character, Meredith Grey, on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.  And it seems she’s continuing the tradition of naming her pets after characters on TV dramas.

Taylor has posted a photo of herself with a tiny white kitten on her lap.  It’s captioned, “Meet Olivia Benson.”  That’s the name of Mariska Hargitay‘s character on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

The kitten appears to be the same breed as Meredith: a Scottish Fold, which has unusually-shaped folded-down ears.

Three Charged with Disorderly Conduct Outside Taylor Swift’s Home

Credit: Sarah BarlowThree people in their twenties were charged with disorderly conduct on Sunday after they threw beer bottles and shouted expletives at security officers outside Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island mansion.

The Westerly Sun reports that according to police, the three — two men and a woman — gave the finger to the security guards and shouted profanity, and threw the bottles onto Taylor’s property in Watch Hill.  When officers arrived, one of them ran away; the others were taken into custody and handcuffed.  The one who ran away, 29-year-old Michael Horrigan, was also caught and arrested, and identified by the guards as the one who specifically flipped off the guards and threw the bottles.

At the police station, all three were charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct, and given a date for a later court appearance.  They were also ordered not to trespass on Taylor’s property.  She wasn’t home at the time.

Meanwhile, one of the other men arrested, Tristan Kading, tells TMZ that he, Horrigan and the third person in their party don’t have anything against Taylor; they were just drinking and things got out of hand.  Kading also says that they didn’t flip off the security guard; rather, he says, they were throwing up the peace sign, like Taylor does in her video for the song “22.”

Taylor Swift Cooks, Drinks, Talks Boys with “Barefoot Contessa” Ina Garten for “Food Network Magazine”

Jake Chessum/Food Network MagazineBack in March, Taylor Swift posted a photo on Instagram of herself posing with food guru Ina Garten, also known as The Barefoot Contessa.  Now, you can find out exactly went down between the two in the new “Music Issue” of Food Network Magazine.  Hint: It involved drinking.

The issue features four top Food Network stars cooking and hanging with their musician buddies, and Taylor and Garten were a perfect pairing, since Garten owns all of Taylor’s albums, and Taylor owns all of Garten’s cookbooks and considers Garten her culinary “hero.”  During their time together at Garten’s home in New York’s trendy Hamptons, the two cooked up some of Taylor’s favorite Barefoot Contessa recipes, including mustard-roasted fish and the meringue dessert known as a Pavlova.

Taylor and Garten also discussed their frustration over people who don’t enjoy eating.  “I’ll cook for these boys, and they’ll be like, ‘I’m on a diet,’” she told the chef. “I’m like, ‘I can’t hang out with you.’”

Taylor’s mom Andrea and her brother Austin joined her for the shoot, and they all ended up downing cocktails together.  It started when Garten mentioned a guest of hers who’d chugged whiskey sours after claiming to be on a cleanse.  Taylor replied, “Oh, I’ve never had a whiskey sour!” to which Garten replied, “I have some in my refrigerator!”  Taylor then said to her mom, “Come over here. We’re day-drinking!”  Austin also joined in the fun.

In addition to Taylor and Garten, the July/August Music Issue features rapper Ja Rule and Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian, rocker Sammy Hagar and Iron Chef Michael Symon, and “Sandwich King” Jeff Mauro with Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan.  The issue hits newsstands June 24.

The Food Network is also sponsoring a music and food festival in Chicago in July, featuring John Mayer as headliner, and appearances by top Food Network stars like Sunny Anderson, Zakarian, Mauro and Anne Burrell.  Visit FoodNetworkInConcert.com for more info.

Sad Because Taylor’s Tour Is Over? She’s Got a Message for You

ABC/Chris HolloAfter 14 months and 86 concerts all over the globe, Taylor Swift‘s RED tour has finally come to an end. Her fans aren’t quite ready to let go, however, using the hashtag #LongLiveREDTour on Twitter to express their sadness about the fact that it’ll be a while before they get to see their idol rock the stage again.  That’s why Taylor’s taken to Instagram with a message designed to make them feel better.

Taylor wrote, “Just so you know….” and posted a photo of a piece of paper with this quote by author C.S. Lewis: “There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”

This is, we assume, a reference to the fact that Taylor will now have time to finish up her new album, which she said is “already my favorite thing that I’ve ever created.”  It’s due at the end of the year, and a slew of TV and magazine appearances will likely precede and follow its release, so cheer up, Swifties:  it won’t be long before you’ll have wall-to-wall Taylor in your life once again.
